Michigan’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) allows you to take a look at your government: permits, arrest records, police procedures, etc. While there’s certain information that’s exempt from the public, there’s a lot of information that’s available to you. According to the Freedom of Information Act:
It is the public policy of this state that all persons, except those persons incarcerated in state or local correctional facilities, are entitled to full and complete information regarding the affairs of government and the official acts of those who represent them as public officials and public employees, consistent with this act. The people shall be informed so that they may fully participate in the democratic process.
Where Do I Send My Freedom Of Information Act Request?
Each city is responsible for administering their own FOIA requests. What you’re trying to FOIA and where that information is located will dictate how you go about filing. For example, if you’re trying to file a Detroit Freedom of Information Act request, you need to use the proper method: there is a police record form, and non-police record form. If you’re making a request to Animal Control, don’t use the police record FOIA form, or the FOIA Dept. will likely deny your request.

How To File A Freedom Of Information Act Request In Michigan.
- Be specific. Use precise dates, times, and locations.
- Use the proper form. If a city has a form to make a request, use it. You can always attach a detailed request by indicating, “see attached,” in the request line.
- Provide your contact information. Your name, email, phone number, and fax number will help the FOIA department find you.
- Expect to pay for your request. Freedom of Information Act requests aren’t free. Police videos often cost close to a $100.
